Speech Sample

As a history major, I've written many persuasive essays to argue that my interpretation of history was the most adept one. I knew that I had to first let my readers know of the background and explain why my arguments were the most feasible out of all the possibilities. However, lacking experience in preparing for persuasive speeches, I chose a topic I felt that I could relate to--tanning.  Before coming to America, I was unfamiliar with the trend of artificially "baking." Tanning has become so prevalent in our society-- college being the prime time for teenagers to engage in this activity. As I moved to State College, I have noticed various tanning salons that my friends often visit, along with the numerous number of people who have the year long tans. Thus, I felt passion to spread awareness of the detrimental effects of tanning and motivate others to protect themselves from it. Taking into consideration that not everyone of my audience have had the experience of artificial tanning, I added how excessive exposure to natural sunlight could be just as harmful.

I selected this piece as I believe that the speech successfully demonstrates my capability to be a confident and passionate speaker and although I could not show improvement in my eye contact in this revision, through practices, I acquired to pay less attention to my notes and focus more on my audience.
